Simple wooden hair pin with small carved head consisting of two conical shapes. [NSty 08/2021] -

Millet seed head
Dried head of pearl millet, shaped like a bullrush, with of hundreds of small millet grains with brown casings. There is a short length of stalk still attached. -
Wooden butter pot on four short legs, with stopper, decorated with incised zigzag patterns
Carved wooden butter pot on four short squared legs. The main body of the pot is divided in the middle by a rounded horizontal band with burnt zigzag decoration above and below the band. Below the band there is a square handle on one side. Above the band the shape flares out. The burnt decorative lines continue over the flat rim at the top of the pot. There is a carved wooden stopper in the top of the pot with similar decoration, in the shape of a head rest. -
Plaited fibre decorated with pairs of small white beads.
Forehead band (omulame) of plaited fibre, decorated at intervals with pairs of small white beads. Fastened by tying. Worn by women. -
A cocoon still attached to a thorny twig.
A cocoon attached to a thorny twig. It is silvery in colour, finely spun and has pointed ends. The twig has been attached to a cork stand. Ovambo people used these cocoons to make leg rattles. This specimen was picked by Antoinette Powell-Cotton. -
Carved wooden flute with six holes simply decorated with brass and silver coloured metal bands
Carved wooden flute, similar in shape to a recorder, with six holes. It is simply decorated with two carved ridges near the mouthpiece and two flat silver coloured metal bands, a third of the way down, followed by a thicker brass coloured metal band, and a second brass coloured band near the bottom of the instrument. -
Wooden sansa with 12 metal keys, incised geometric decoration and string on back
Sansa or thumb piano in the form of a rectangular wooden board with raised edges. It has 12 metal keys or tines, set on a raised wooden box and attached to the board with metal wire. The board is decorated with incised patterns. On the front below the tines is an etched block of eight squares with crosses in their centres, and a line of six circles on the bottom edge. On the back there are rows of circles at the top and bottom, and a square cross, with a circle at the end of each arm, in the centre. There is a short plant fibre string on the back threaded through two holes. At the bottom there is a thick metal wire similar to a large staple with three cylindrical metal beads threaded on it. -
Hand rattle made of two round fruits with small round holes in them, on a wooden stick.
Hand rattle made of two round fruits (possibly monkey oranges) with small round holes drilled in them. The handle is made of a wooden stick, thinner at one end, which has been inserted into the fruits. A small piece of wood has been driven through the thin end of the stick to hold the fruits in place. There is a disk of animal skin in between the fruits with short brown hair present. -
Wooden stick dipped in blood and charcoal, decorated with rings of animal eyelid skin and hair
Wooden stick which has been dipped in blood and charcoal, and decorated at one end with four rings of animal skin from the eyelids of animals killed. The rings of skin have light and dark brown fur suggesting they may come from different animals. The lowest ring has distinct long black hair (eyelashes). Used as a hunter's charm, it was placed in the fire before dawn and the scorched end used to mark the hunter's forehead in order to bring luck and improve aim for the hunter. -

Back skin with different textures of animal hide sewn together, with areas of black hair, puckered and gathered hide and two long hide straps. -
Leather strap made of two thin strips decorated with metal bands and conus shell
Conus strap. Thin brown leather strap made of two strips, each decorated with alternating bands of brass and copper metal pressed flat around the leather. At one end there is a larger flat piece of brass holding the two strips together and the rounded flat end of a white conus shell tied with leather thong through a hole in the shell.
