JoAnn is Professor of Human Geography and African Studies in the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex. She directs the Sussex Africa Centre. Her research focuses on Southern African social history and contemporary politics, particularly in relation to Zimbabwe, African diasporas in Britain and the politics of heritage. Her books include: Violence and Memory: One Hundred Years in the ‘Dark Forests’ of Matabeleland, Zimbabwe (2000, co-authored with Jocelyn Alexander and Terence Ranger); Crossing the Zambezi: The Politics of Landscape on a Central African Frontier (2009); Zimbabwe’s New Diaspora: Displacement and the Politics of Survival (2010, co-edited with Ranka Primorac). She is principle investigator of the MAC project and contributed to the primary research on the Botswana collection. Other on-going research projects are on Southern African liberation movements' transnational histories, and on citizenship and urban politics in Zimbabwe.
