Discussion about : Tchiliwandele and the Making African Connections Project - A display at Powell-Cotton Museum

Description

On the 3rd of July 2020 Inbal Livne, Napandulwe Shiweda and Nicola Stylianou met on zoom to talk about the Tchiliwandele display that Inbal Livne and Nicola Stylianou had curated and which had opened at the Powell-Cotton Museum just before COVID 19 forced the museum to close for several weeks. Please click on the links below and then select 'Other Media' to play the clips.
In the first short clip Napandulwe gives her initial thoughts on the exhibition.
Nicola explains where she thinks Tchiliwandele was based and how the archive tells us this.
Inbal talks about the role of maps in the gallery space.
Napandulwe explains why it is important to understand the context in which the colletion was made and to represent it in the gallery. Nicola talks about the information from the sister's diary that tells us a bit about Tchiliwandele and his life.
We begin with Inbal talking about the different audiences the museum needs to address, both locally and internationally. Nicola questions whether focussing on one individual creates as many problems as it solves when so many people contributed to the collection. We return to maps and then go on to consider how we can adapt the online exhibition to better meet the needs of the international audience.
Napandulwe questions our use of language and suggests alternatives she feels would have been more suitable.
Napandulwe and Inbal talk about the plans for contemporary collecting in Ovamboland next year. Inbal also talks about the wider issues the museum is trying to address and how Napandulwe's input has been useful.
