Description

A portrait of Soba Tchiliwandele sitting and looking at the camera, his head rests on one hand. He is wearing a cap which is now in the Powell-Cotton Museum collection although the Omba (conus shells) attached to it are not.. He described the hat and the Omba as symbols of his position Soba and was unwilling to sell them. Square black and white photograph taken on a Rolliflex camera by Diana Powell-Cotton while staying with Soba Tchiliwandele in present day Huila Province.
The Powell-Cotton sisters describe Tchiliwandele as being Soba in Omunjamba. They stayed with him from 30 May to 2nd June 1937. The location of his home is indicated on the map of the 1937 trip, just north east of Quipungo. The sisters collected a large number of objects while staying with him and his name can be found in museum catalogues that received objects from the trips. .
