Description
A Framed pencil drawn image titled 'Too Late!' by Sir John Tenniel, for Punch a weekly magazine of humour and satire in the Victorian period . The drawing depicts Britania front and centre, sword in hand, shield at her feet, with her left arm raised across her eyes, with a look of grief on her face. There are men in the background, presumably followers of the Mahdi, storming a gate, some are carrying spears, others banners. In the bottom left corner is the artists signature and the year 1885.
Above the drawing in a separate apperture is a typed caption 'ORIGINAL DRAWING FROM "PUNCH" / by the late SIR JOHN TENNIEL / Presented by Miss E. Gallathy'. Underneath the drawing in a separate apperture, a typed caption reads 'TOO LATE!' / Telegram Thursday morning 5th February: "Khartoum taken by the Madhi. General Gordon's fate uncertain." / "Punch" 14th February 1885'. [DS 11/11/2020]
