Description
The remains of a ten piastre note dated 25th April 1884, issued by Charles Gordon, in a gold frame. The fragment of the note is badly damaged, with a ragged left and bottom edge. The note has two thin black lines for borders, at the top is a small black frame with Arabic text, underneath this is further Arabic text. There is also a faint stamp as well as part of General Gordon's signature. 'A Ten piastre Bank note of Gordon's from / Khartoum. / Date 25 April 1884' is handwritten underneath the fragment of the note.
On the reverse of the frame in a handrawn box, written in ink is the following 'Ten Egyptian Piastres / 13.34 1314 / This amount is acknowledged & is to be / paid from the treasury at Khartoum or Cairo / six months after the present date / 25 April 1884 / Gordon Pasha / C. E. Gordon'. There are notes written around the edges of the box as well, one stating that 'Gordon Pasha' is written in Arabic on the note. In the top right corner of the label on the reverse of the frame is a red wax seal. [DS 11/11/2020]
