Photograph album 'Khartoum'

Description

A bound photo album which has been titled 'Khartoum', a record of the Omdurman campaign. [NSty]
The album contains 47 pages of photographs, mostly three to a page arranged as a vertical column. The photographs record the activities of 1st Battalion Warkwickshire Regiment from the 11th of August until the middle of September 1898. They cover the build up and the aftermath of the Battle of Omdurman.
Handwritten into the front of the album is a quote from page 42 of 'The Vast Sudan' by Major A. Radclyffe Dunmore, published by Arrowsmith in 1924. A digital copy of the book is available as part of the Mahmoud Salih Collection at the University of Bergen Library.
To view the album as a pdf, click 'GGC404_pages_redacted.pdf' in the Other Media field and then again on the image that appears.
A small number of the photographs contain fatalities. We have therefore decided not to publish these images. Our rationale is broadly in line with the statement on 'Ethnographic photographs and ethics' linked below.
