Description

The 1st Battalion the Royal Warwickshire Regiment served in Sudan in 1898 alongside the Seaforth Highlanders, the Cameron Highlanders and the Lincolnshire Regiment: these four battalions made up a British brigade under the overall command of Major-Gen. William Gatacre (pictured below). The Warwickshires had fought at the Battle of the Atbara (8 April 1898). The photo album begins as the battalion is advancing via Major-Gen. Herbert Kitchener’s newly constructed railway south from the Egyptian border. [FN 11/2020]
