Description
Manuscript copies of two letters written by Gen. Gordon in Khartoum. Single sheet has a copy on each side, headed “Confidential”, and both displayed under glass.
Letter dated 15 April 1884 to European Consul Generals and the Pope appealing for aid. Letter dated 16 April 1884 appeals to the Consul Gen. of Turkey.
In a later journal entry (17 November 1884), Gordon recalled writing these letters: 'All the Powers (including Pope and excluding England & France) were appealed to in a touching memo, to raise an auxiliary Force under Baker, &c., &c., & to stop the wave of Dervisch fanaticism. I also wrote to Sultan, I do not know if these appeals ever got through ...'
Badly damaged, with fragments missing across middle sections (ellipses in attached transcription).
Frame has gilt mounts and a silver plaque engraved with the title and donor’s name. [FN/ON 14.8.19, FHM 2019]
