Description
Dark blue bound scrapbook, originally belonging to Lady Watson, wife of Lt.-Col. (later Maj.-Gen. Sir) Charles Watson of the Royal Engineers. Gold lettering embossed on the cover reads: 'CAIRO 1883-1886. "HAEC OLIM MEMINISSE JUVABIT" ['One day it will be a pleasure to remember these things', Virgil's Aeneid 1/203] G. W'. Contains photographs and letters of the Watsons during their stay in Cairo, including six letters from Gordon in particular the last extant letter from Khartoum (dated 14th December 1884). It is handwritten in black ink, dated and placed in Khartoum, signed off with Gordon's signature.
