Maj. Sir Evelyn Baring (later Lord Cromer) was a veteran and highly efficient Viceroy of Egypt, supervising all civilian aspects of the British occupation in the wake of the invasion of late 1882; his brief embraced Sudan inasmuch as it was Egypt’s southern colony. Baring maintained regular communications with Gen. Gordon but, as a precaution, recruited the Times correspondent Frank Power as an informant in Khartoum [FN/ON 09/02/2020]
