Tchiliwandele

Description

The Powell-Cotton sisters describe him as being Soba in Omunjamba. They stayed with him from 30 May to 2nd June 1937 and collected many objects and much information. When objects are known to have been bought from him, collected with his assistance or while staying in his village they will be linked to this record. In this way we hope to begin to build up a picture of his role in the creation of the collection. There are approximately sixty objects in the collection which we know are associated with him in some way.

The sister’s record conversations with Tchiliwandele in their diaries. They recorded that Tchiliwandele had inherited his position as Soba from his uncle Tchipapwa who had been shot. Tchipapwa made a journey to Benguela where he was presented with a folding chair and and blanket. When he returned the Chefe de Posto in his area did not believe these things had been presented to him and shot him.
Tchiliwandele also provided the sisters with information about war and how thieves were dealt with, alluding to recent changes in this process which had removed the power to deal with these issues from the Soba and placing it with the Chefe de Posto.
