Harp
A stringed instrument, Sudanese harp in wood and leather, larger and more ornate than 247, with sculptured head terminal to peg board. Areas are patterned and aforementioned head has wooden stud through nose. -
'MIRAGE'
A mounted and framed pencil drawing by Sir John Tenniel, which is the original of the print that appeared in Punch, a weekly magazine of humour and satire. General Charles Gordon is depicted from behind leaning against a wall, with his right arm raised, hand shielding his eyes and looking to the horizon, awaiting the arrival of the relief expedition at Khartoum. In the lower left hand corner of the drawing is Tenniel's signature and the date 1884. In an apperture above the drawing the following caption is typed 'ORIGINAL DRWAING FROM "PUNCH" / by the late JOHN TENNIEL. / Presented by MAjor Thomas Brooke, MA., JP / through / Field Marshall The Rt. Hon. The Viscount Montgomery of Alamein / KG., GCB., DSC., DCL., LL.D.'. In an apperture underneath the drawing the following caption has been written by hand ' "MIRAGE." / Gen. Gordon. "What is it that I seem to see / across the sand-waste?" / [unclear] april 12. 1884.'. [DS 11/11/2020] -
Egyptian breach-loading carbine, Remington 1874, pattern
An Egyptian breach-loading carbine, Remington 1874, pattern. Steel barrel with a wooden stock. "R" is engraved on the left hand side above trigger and again on back of the barrel. There is a steel trigger flip back mechanism and sight. A small crown is engraved on left hand side of the barrel on the steel gap, connecting the barrel to the wooden stock. "M" is engraved on the left hand side of the wooden stock toward the back and the inscription on the metal plate on top of the wooden stock reads "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y U.S.A PATD" D MAY 7 JUNE 11 NOV12 DEC 24 DEC 31 1872 SEP 73". (Some engraving is unreadable). The weapon was apparently taken from the battlefield of Tel-el-Kebir, September 1882. [DS 11/11/2020] -
A Ten piastre note signed by Gordon
The remains of a ten piastre note dated 25th April 1884, issued by Charles Gordon, in a gold frame. The fragment of the note is badly damaged, with a ragged left and bottom edge. The note has two thin black lines for borders, at the top is a small black frame with Arabic text, underneath this is further Arabic text. There is also a faint stamp as well as part of General Gordon's signature. 'A Ten piastre Bank note of Gordon's from / Khartoum. / Date 25 April 1884' is handwritten underneath the fragment of the note. On the reverse of the frame in a handrawn box, written in ink is the following 'Ten Egyptian Piastres / 13.34 1314 / This amount is acknowledged & is to be / paid from the treasury at Khartoum or Cairo / six months after the present date / 25 April 1884 / Gordon Pasha / C. E. Gordon'. There are notes written around the edges of the box as well, one stating that 'Gordon Pasha' is written in Arabic on the note. In the top right corner of the label on the reverse of the frame is a red wax seal. [DS 11/11/2020] -

Camel Hide Shield
A camel hide shield. The shield has an elongated oval shape wih longitudinal cane support, the surface of the shield is 'rippled' where the cetral support is threaded through the skin. The shield is thought to be Sudanese. [DS 11/11/2020] -
"Too Late"
A Framed pencil drawn image titled 'Too Late!' by Sir John Tenniel, for Punch a weekly magazine of humour and satire in the Victorian period . The drawing depicts Britania front and centre, sword in hand, shield at her feet, with her left arm raised across her eyes, with a look of grief on her face. There are men in the background, presumably followers of the Mahdi, storming a gate, some are carrying spears, others banners. In the bottom left corner is the artists signature and the year 1885. Above the drawing in a separate apperture is a typed caption 'ORIGINAL DRAWING FROM "PUNCH" / by the late SIR JOHN TENNIEL / Presented by Miss E. Gallathy'. Underneath the drawing in a separate apperture, a typed caption reads 'TOO LATE!' / Telegram Thursday morning 5th February: "Khartoum taken by the Madhi. General Gordon's fate uncertain." / "Punch" 14th February 1885'. [DS 11/11/2020] -
'Sketch map to illustrate obstales to navigtion of the Nile'
A printed map of the River Nile from Khartoum to Cairo, scale 1:4,000,000. The map predominantly shows Sudan, as well as areas of the Red Sea and Abyssinia. The title (top right), distances and notes on navigation are printed in red whilst the map details, including the telegraph route are printed in black. Along the bottom right edge 'Printed & published by the National Press Agency 13, Whitefriars St E.C. for the Liberal Central Association' is printed. The map is glazed and within a black frame with a gold trim. [DS 11/11/2020] -

Letter from Sayyid 'Abd al-Rahmān al-Mahdi
The letter assures the reader of the respect and esteem that Muhammad Ahmad al -Mahdi held for General Gordon. It quotes extensively a letter from his father to Gordon, which was written on the 17th of January 1885. 'Abd al-Rahmān was an important political figure in his own right during the colonial era (1898-1955). -
