Description
On the 21st of August 1902, shortly after the move from Phalapaye to Serowe, Willoughby wrote to the London Missionary Society about the death of his son Howard. He explained that Howard's was the first grave to be created in the new English cemetery. During their research Brighton and Hove Black History because interested in Howard and his role as a translator and wondered if his grave could be traced. While in Serowe Nicola visited the cemetery which is now part of Masokola cemetery, it exists as a seperate, gated space maintained by the descendents of those buried there. It continues to be used today. It was not possible to identify Howard's grave. The back part of the cemetery is believed to be where the oldest graves are and many graves in this section did not have grave stones, those that did exist were very worn.
Nicola and the MAC project team are very grateful to Nora Ballentine for facilitating access to the cemetery.
