Research trip to Sudan (March 2020)

Description

A brief research trip to Khartoum, Omdurman and El Obeid was undertaken by Making African Connections (MAC) consultant Fergus Nicoll between 6 and 14 March 2020.
The trip would not have been so productive without the invaluable involvement of MAC consultants Reem Al Hilou and Osman Nusairi, who between them arranged a busy programme of events, museum/location visits and interviews. The research trip was facilitated by the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM), which sponsored a two-month visa for Fergus.

The purpose of the trip was threefold:
•to inform current and potential collaborators, as well as other relevant parties, about the nature and progressofthe MAC project, the development of the new bilingual website and the planned new exhibition at the Royal Engineers Museum (REM);
•to research existing public collections and/or private holdings of Mahdiyya artefacts and documentation comparable to the REM collection, and engage in person with historians and al-Mahdi family members;
•and to discuss potential legacy projects that could enable future collaborative activities under the principles that guide MAC.

These three priorities were addressed, respectively, by the following activities:
•three public presentations by Fergus, introduced by Osman and with Q&A sessions moderated by Reem;
•five museum visits, several personal visits and interviews, and one battlefield tour;
•conversations with officials of three independent academic/research institutions, as well as public consultation at the presentations mentioned above

From this page you can find links to the interviews recorded by Fergus.
