C.E.J. Walkley, ‘The Story of Khartoum (concluded)’, Sudan Notes and Records 19/1 (1936), pp. 81-2, describes the desecration of the cemetery at the Roman Catholic Mission chapel, noting also that by April 1886 ‘the church bells had been pulled down and lay in the garden undamaged’. The same article notes that, when Kitchener’s soldiers reached Khartoum on 4 September 1898, ‘everything was in ruins and there was not one complete house standing’. [FN 11/2020]
