Description
Facsimiles of two messages from Gen. Gordon in Khartoum: the first (begun on 21 April 1884 and sent on 27 April) to Sir Evelyn Baring, the British Consul in Egypt; the second (dated 30 July 1884) to the Egyptian government under Prime Minister Nubar Pasha. The first message was sent to Baring by telegram and has the appearance of a day-by-day summary of events (even though Gen. Gordon's ADC, Col. Stewart, was charged with keeping the formal campaign journal). By late July, the telegraph wires had been cut and the second letter was probably sent downriver by armed steamer. Both were published as supplements to The Graphic newspaper. [FN/ON 14.8.19, FHM 2019]
