Title

Owambo Kraal

Description

Black and white photograph showing the distinctive wooden pole fences of an Owambo kraal. Someone can be seen standing in the distance.
Please see APC and DPC diaries for July 1937 for an account of their time in Namibia, referred to as SWA.
See APC and DPC notes on building a Kwanyama homestead based on information provided by Hamjungo and translated by Alfaeri.
Long passages of these poles surround(ed) and protect(ed) homesteads in Northern Namibia and South Western Angola it is possible to see similar fencing in the model on display in Gallery 4. The fencing goes around the whole kraal and divides sections of it up. The passages are narrow to prevent intruders and the whole functions as a labyrinth with the most important parts of the kraal at the centre.
